Summer Internship Programme 2025 (Medical and Scientific Branch / Technology and Innovation Branch)
The HKGI Summer Internship Programme offers a unique opportunity for passionate and aspiring students to gain valuable experience and industry insights in genomics and related fields. Running between June and August 2025, the programme offers students the opportunity to explore the operations of the Hong Kong Genome Project (HKGP), working with a team of highly professional and experienced professionals.
We are seeking passionate students eager to develop their careers in genomics and related fields. Successful candidates will be assigned to either the Medical and Scientific Branch or the Technology and Innovation Branch, based on their academic background and interests.
Medical and Scientific Branch
a) Hong Kong Genome Project
- Understand the workflow of the HKGP, including patient recruitment, pre-test genetic counselling, whole genome sequencing and genome data analysis
b) Laboratory
- Conduct DNA extraction from tissue samples and perform quality checks
- Gain exposure to next / third-generation sequencing systems and other laboratory analysers
c) Research
- Develop a foundational understanding of genome data analysis for whole genome sequencing
- Conduct literature reviews and assist in ongoing research projects
- Create presentation materials for multi-disciplinary meetings
Technology and Innovation Branch
a) Application Development and System Testing
- Participate in the implementation of in-house and vendor-based platforms and applications
- Assist in preparing test plan for system integration testing and facilitating user testing
b) Data Analysis
- Conduct research in technologies and tools used in genome projects to assess their feasibility for implementation at HKGI
- Support the generation of statistical data and dashboards of HKGP for management reports
Key Responsibilities
- Provide day-to-day operational support to the team
- Participate in research and/or specific projects as required
- Undertake any other duties as assigned by mentors
Requirements:
- Residents of the HKSAR and lawfully employable in the HKSAR
- Keen to learn and work in genomics and related fields
- Ideally, university students majoring in
- Roles in the Medical and Scientific Branch: Medical Laboratory Sciences, Biochemistry, Biology or related disciplines
- Roles in the Technology and Innovation Branch: Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or related disciplines
- Self-starter with positive attitude and a high sense of responsibility
- Proven academic excellence and performance
- Good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Good command of written and spoken English and Chinese
Office Location:

Programme Duration:
Successful candidates will receive four to eight weeks of on-the-job training at the Hong Kong Genome Institute between June and August 2025, with a monthly allowance to be determined by the HKGI. The internship period may be extended subject to HKGI operational requirements and candidates’ availability.

Finance and Procurement
- Assist in daily accounting operations and preparing monthly reporting
- Provide support for payment processing and fixed asset management
- Assist in procurement activities and projects
- Support administrative duties such as document filing and data input
Corporate Communications
- Assist in the design and production of HKGI corporate publications and social media content, such as the Annual Report and LinkedIn updates
- Conduct industry research; draft and translate promotion materials to publicise HKGI’s work
- Assist in the planning, logistics and coordination of corporate events/visits
- Support daily news and social media monitoring
- Support the team’s record management, daily operations and ad hoc tasks

Research Assistant (Genome Curation) - Expired
Reporting to Research Officer (Genome Curation), the incumbent will assume the following responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in developing and managing genome curation platform for next-generation sequencing (NGS) data
- Support the research officer in developing processes or models for variant prioritisation
- Receive training in tertiary analysis for whole genome sequencing (WGS) data, which includes (a) variant filtering and prioritisation (b) classification, and (c) selection of reportable variants
- Assist in data mining, curation, and interpretation of genome sequencing results according to current international standards
- Generate plots and figures to assist in the presentation of results
- Conduct basic literature reviews, research, and perform related clerical duties
- Participate in research and development activities
- Perform any other duties assigned by senior officers
Requirements:
We are seeking a high-calibre candidate for the post of Research Assistant (Genome Curation) who possesses:
- A bachelor’s degree or above in Biomedical Sciences, Genetic Sciences, Health Sciences, Medical Statistics, Biological Sciences, or a related discipline.
- Basic knowledge and experience in research studies, with a willingness to receive on-the-job training.
- Familiarity with NGS technology and its data formats is preferred.
- Proficiency in coding in Python or R, and data-wrangling skills such as extracting information from VCF files and manipulating data structures are desirable.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Cantonese (spoken) and English (written); strong written English is an advantage
- Strong teamwork and collaboration mindset.
- Experience in genome research resulting in publications in international peer-reviewed journals is preferred.
- Knowledge or experience in the analysis of cancer genomes, single-cell sequencing, and long-read sequencing data is a plus.
- Experience in patient care, clinical research, and the use of digital health technologies in healthcare settings would be advantageous.

Manager (Corporate Communications) - Expired
Reporting to the Head of Corporate Communications, the incumbent will perform the following responsibilities to enhance HKGI’s brand awareness and foster public understanding of genomic medicine by planning and implementing a wide range of publicity initiatives.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop corporate messages and high-quality bilingual write-ups and articles to promote the work of HKGI
- Produce corporate publications and multimedia content, such as annual reports, leaflets, videos and branding items; manage the entire production process from creative concept to layout and printing
- Work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the quality and accuracy of publicity materials
- Plan and organise corporate events and visits, ensuring smooth implementation through effective management of budget, schedule, logistics and post-event follow-ups
- Manage HKGI’s social media platform by developing engaging posts and monitoring performance to enhance HKGI’s online presence
- Oversee SEO and the content/design of HKGI website
- Perform any other duties assigned by senior officers
Requirements:
We are seeking a high-calibre candidate for the post of Manager (Corporate Communications) who possesses:
- A university degree in English and Literature, Language Studies, Communications, Public Relations or related disciplines
- At least 10 years of relevant work experience; experience in sizable public organisations will be an advantage
- Solid experience and knowledge in copywriting, production of corporate publications, such as annual report, newsletter and videos
- Proven track record in developing impactful stories, planning and organising events and publicity campaigns targeting both the general public and professionals
- Solid experience in managing social media platforms such as LinkedIn
- Hands-on experience with web content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress; experience in website revamp will be an added advantage
- Excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese
- A proactive, self-driven attitude with the ability to work independently in a dynamic setting
- Strong presentation and communication skills, keen attention to detail, resourcefulness and ability to multi-task
